Overflow
I was relaxing, doing a typical Facebook scroll this evening. And as I scrolled, I found myself noticing in a new way how people post. The patterns. For instance - there's my friend who loves cooking, posting a new recipe. There's my friend who is passionate about healthy eating, with a new post on the benefits of organic food. My friend who adores her family, her joy bubbling up in a new story about her cuties. My book loving friends, whose posts are practically chapters of books. What they are reading is just too good not to share! I was scrolling pretty quickly, realizing that I basically knew what each friend would post. Because of who they are and what they love, their posts were in a way expected.
Even beyond Facebook, our conversations, our interactions with others, our very lives are an overflow of what we love - what we hold dear. I talk about what I prize.
As I was rolling all of this over in my mind tonight, I was sobered. My words, spoken or tweeted, matter. The reason they matter is because they are an overflow of what has captured my heart.
Now I am not saying that every post needs to be a John Piper quote...God has given us vast and varied pursuits and gifts to enjoy! But what I am saying is I simply have to pay attention to what I find myself talking about most. The complaints that all too often spill out my lips, the amount of time I spend talking about myself and my own needs and desires -- It's true. I talk most about what I prize most. And sadly, more often than not, it's myself.
So, this week will find me listening to the countless words that I speak and post. I'm asking the Lord to open my eyes to what my heart is prizing most in those moments. And by the grace of God, be reminded afresh that Christ is my life.
