In the Middle

The middle of the story. The middle of the night. The middle of the long wait. We always find ourselves in the middle of something. How we think about the middle makes all the difference. I often hear the quote "Faith thanks God in the middle of the story." Ouch. Not just when we are rejoicing at good news? Not just when this ongoing trial that I thought would NEVER end finally resolves. Not simply when I end my day with warm thoughts of God's faithfulness and goodness to me, while I sip my mocha and enjoy some cozy journal time.

No, it's in the middle too. The middle of that sleepless night when worries pile on fast and heavy, and my heart is weighed down with care. It's in the middle of that argument with a loved one when everything is unclear and anger is rising. It's smack dab in the middle of heart wrenching loss.

I find myself in the middle tonight. Do you as well, I wonder? The middle of a trial that has gone on and on and on and on. Weary with it all, I question if it will ever end. And yet, faith, or rather Christ, calls me to thank Him. To cast my care upon Him and thank Him. Why am I thanking Him? Oh ten thousand reasons. He bore my sin upon the cross. Hallelujah! That is the ultimate song of gratitude!! And all else pales in light of such provision. But He also daily bears my burdens. More thanks rendered. He upholds me by His grace. More thanks due Him. He sustains me each and every moment....especially the moments I think I cannot endure. He holds me and covers me with grace, sweet grace.

What's more, faith also rises in the middle of trial, as I am reminded of my God who is writing my story, knows the final ending. The best indeed yet to come. So when despair fills the soul at the thought of what the future may hold, when tears fall daily, when the weight of your current trial seems to crush you, stop for a moment and remember. Remember Jesus. Remember His power. Remember His love. And thank Him in the middle.
